Professional Internship for PhD Students (PIPS)

During their PhD, in the middle years of their training, standard YBDTP students undertake a three month Professional Internship for PhD Students (PIPS).

This is an important component of our doctoral training programme. It gives students the opportunity to gain experience of work in a professional environment, and acquire transferable skills that will be beneficial in their future careers.

Our flexible PIPS scheme will enable students to find placement opportunities tailored to their own needs. The process is student-led, but specialised professional development co-ordinators based at each of the universities are on hand to support students through the process of applying for, and securing, a PIPS.

For current PhD students, more information on PIPS can be found here.

Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE)

Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) are PhD studentships that involve collaboration between academic institutions and non-academic partners.

These fund projects that are designed and delivered through equal partnerships between universities and external organisations from business and industry.

Instead of doing a PIPS placement, PhD students on CASE projects will do a placement of three or more months with the non-academic partner. For example, this might be a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company. Students gain valuable experience in a non-academic environment.
