Advice for applicants

Who do we recruit?

The Yorkshire Bioscience DTP is committed to recruiting extraordinary future scientists regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation or career pathway to date.

We aim to recruit scientists who have a genuine passion for scientific research and who use their PhD as a platform for a career in the UK bioeconomy.

What do we look for in the expression of interest?

  • You will need to have, or expect to obtain, at least a 2.1 bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
  • For UK applicants a masters level qualification, may be beneficial but it is not essential. We recruit many UK students who only have a bachelor’s level qualification.
  • A good PhD application is more than just academic qualifications. We value experience of research and/or of working in the laboratory and/or the field. This experience will include projects in your degree course(s), as well as any additional experience from placements and employment doing laboratory and/or field work. Include this experience in your supporting statements.
  • Think about how a PhD will enable you to pursue your chosen career path. This may be in academic research, but our PhD graduates go onto many other careers, including as industrial research, commercialisation of research and science communications.
  • Prospective supervisors will look for a genuine passion and interest in their research area and project. Read their research papers to find out more about the research area and think about how your skills and experience can contribute to this research.
  • If you have authored any research publications or presented your research at a conference, include this in your statements to demonstrate your capabilities in communicating research and as evidence that you can produce impactful research.
  • We also look for personal qualities that a postgraduate researcher needs, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, the ability to work in teams and independently. Examples of these will add to your expression of interest.

Referees

  • If selected for interview, we will request references from your referees.
  • We recommend that you choose at least one referee who has seen you in a research environment, such as a project supervisor, as they are well placed to comment on your capabilities.
  • We also recommend that you ask your referees in advance if they can provide a reference. This may help them provide a reference in a timely manner when we consider your expression of interest.
